Corona Troubles: Marriages A Distant Dream!

Corona Troubles: Marriages A Distant Dream!

Coronavirus has impacted several aspects of life. Everyone is discussing about economic slowdown, loss of employment, paycuts etc. The impact of all these is directly visible on the marriages in India.

Except for the Nikhil Gowda wedding a few days ago, no other marriages are taking place.  There are a few instances where the already scheduled marriages are conducted with bare minimum expenditure in the presence of 15-20 people.

The majority of the marriages have been called off indefinitely.

The parents are reviewing the situation and the match they have chosen for their children, because the situations have been completely changed post Covid-19 outbreak.

"The marriage of our daughter in scheduled on May 15th. But we dont want to send our girl to the USA. We understood it is not safe. So we have cancelled the match", said a mother from Tenali.

When explained this is only a temporary issue and why to take such decision, she emphasized, "We dont have any relatives living in the USA. We come to know how people are dying there by reading on news papers and watching on TV. Our minds are disturbed. We cannot give our daughter to any NRI".

Apart from this, as several businesses are badly hit, nobody is able to predict who is going to be financially stable in the coming six months/one year. So the parents are not in a hurry to fix new matches.

"We feel like looking out for a groom who is in good government job for our daughter. Those jobs are safe in recession times. Many of our relatives have lost their software jobs in Hyderabad. The virus like Corona will come again and again we feel. So playing safe is better than aiming big. I am trying to explain this to my daughter but she is still in dollar dreams. What can we do? Young blood never understands the safe game for peaceful life", a father of a bride from Karimnagar expressed.

Bachelors across India are already facing uncountable troubles in finding a girl for marriage, forget about a suitable girl.  This situation is not limited to a particular caste or religion.

Now, the thought process of parents has been drastically changed and their preferences are also changed. The majority of them are adopting a wait and watch policy for at least a year.

"This will be a knockout punch for the bachelors like me who have already crossed the 'youth'. The bitter truth is that we just have to forget about marriage forever in these hard times" lamented a 36 year old yet to be married software engineer from Hyderabad.
