Kamma community might be on cloud nine with the return of Telugu Desam Party president N Chandrababu Naidu to power in Andhra Pradesh in 2014 elections, but in Telangana, their obvious preference appears to be Telangana Rashtra Samithi, rather than the TDP.
During the days of agitation for separate Telangana, the Kammas from Andhra had strongly protested against the bifurcation of then combined state of AP.
In fact, they were in the forefront of the agitation, whether it was politicians like Lagadapati, Rayapati, Kavuri, and Daggubati or media barons like Ramoji Rao, Vemuri Radhakrishna, NTV Chowdary or TV5 Naidu. However, things changed drastically after the separation of Telangana.
Now, all the Kamma leaders are looking up to TRS president and chief minister K Chandrasekhar Rao as their saviour. All the media houses owned by Kammas have become pro-TRS now.
And Kamma politicians like Tummala Nageshwara Rao, Puvvada Ajay Kumar, Maganti Gopinath, Arikepudi Gandhi and Koneru Konappa have all joined the TRS. The latest entry of a Kamma leader into the TRS was N Bhaskar Rao of Miryalguda.
Reasons for this sudden change of mind is anybody’s guess!
